TRANSCRIPTION FACTORS AND miRNAS

We have screened a few thousand genes in primary neurons using overexpression strategies.  The ones that seem the most effective at inducing axon growth in downstream validation assays and in vivo are genes that regulate many other targets.  Genes for cytoskeletal elements, even though they might be very active in vitro, such as doublecortin, don’t do much in vivo.  Consequently, we currently focus on kinases, transcription factors (like STAT3, KLF4 and KLF7, Jun) and miRNAs.
